What Is an Ocean Cruise?
Ocean cruises are the traditional cruise experience most people think of. They take you across seas and coastlines on medium-to-large ships with tons of amenities onboard — think pools, entertainment, spas, restaurants, and activities for all ages. FAQs
Q: When is the best time to book a cruise?
A: The earlier, the better — especially if you want the best cabin selection and price. As a general rule, booking 6–18 months in advance gives you the most options. Popular itineraries (like Alaska and school breaks) often sell out quicker. Sometimes cruise lines will also post some cheaper cabins if the sail date is soon. If you're looking for affordability, have a lot of flexibility, and don't have a cabin preference, we can also look into fast approaching cruises.
Q: Do I need a passport to cruise?
A: It depends on the itinerary. For most U.S. round-trip Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, you can sail with a state-issued birth certificate and ID. However, a passport is highly recommended in case of emergencies or mid-trip travel changes. For international itineraries, a passport is required.
Q: How many days should my first cruise be?
A: Many first-time cruisers start with a 4–7 night sailing. Shorter cruises are great for testing the experience, while week-long itineraries offer more ports and a better taste of the cruise lifestyle. There are 2 and 3 day cruises available as well if you're looking for a really quick turn around.
Q: What's the best type of room to choose?
A: It depends on your style and budget. Interior rooms are the most affordable, oceanview and balcony rooms offer scenery and fresh air, and suites include extra space and perks. I’ll help you decide based on comfort, destination, pricing, and ship layout.
Q: Are cruises good for families?
A: Yes! Many ocean cruise lines are extremely family-friendly and include kids’ clubs, entertainment, arcades, water slides, and flexible dining options. Some cruise lines even offer reduced fares or kids-sail-free promotions during certain dates.
Q: Will I get seasick?
A: While most guests don’t experience strong motion, especially on newer or larger ships, it is always a possibility, especially during turbulent weather. If you're concerned, choosing a mid-ship, lower-level stateroom helps minimize movement. Medication, patches, or bands can also help if you're prone to motion sensitivity.
Q: What should I pack?
A: Pack comfortable daytime clothing, swimwear, evening outfits, and any required travel documents. Depending on the cruise line, you may want an outfit for formal or themed nights. A jacket is always nice for cool nights as well. After you book, I will send a helpful packing guide for your trip.
Q: When should I check in?
A: Cruise check-in usually opens 21–45 days before sailing, depending on the cruise line. Checking in early gives you access to earlier boarding times and makes embarkation smoother.
Q: I have already booked my ocean cruise. Are you still able to help me?
A: I sure can! Many cruise lines will allow you to transfer your reservation to me. As your dedicated travel agent, I will be able to assist you with planning and any pre-trips needs.
